Gemma Ziegler's novel “Ruby Rose: Coming Home” takes inspiration from strong women

By: WebWire

How far women have come in the last hundred years? Ruby Rose: Coming Home (ReadersMagnet; YEAR TBD) by Gemma Ziegler will tell readers how hard times create strong women.

The story takes place in 1930 and follows the determined character from her palatial home in New York to her family's 600-hundred-acre farm in Cornishville, Kentucky. Ruby Rose's husband has died, and now alone and on the verge of bankruptcy, she left New York to return to her roots. She never had wanted to return to Cornishville, where her return ignites the painful events that had provoked her to run away at age 14.

The only thing that makes the transition bearable is the thought of being isolated on her family's farm. She has not the time to properly grieve her soul-wrenching loss. She needs time and seclusion to heal, but life has other plans for her. Ruby Rose's seclusion didn't last for long when intruders interrupt her solitude with their own set of problems, giving her a reason to embrace life once again. Helping others emboldens her to finally confront her darkest secret and seek the justice that had been denied her.

While Ruby Rose is fictional, Ziegler borrowed bits and pieces from her family's collective experiences, personal experiences, and years as a social activist. The author has an ancestry of strong women on both sides of her family. “I dedicate this book to the many generations of strong women in my family, who, when faced with difficult situations, put a smile on their face, dug in their heels, and did what they had to do to take care of themselves and their families. They were the backbone of our families. They are my inspiration.

Ruby Rose is a social justice story arriving at the perfect time in history. “I wrote Ruby Rose four years before social media's resurgence of the “Me Too” movement,” said Ziegler. “If you are a woman in our society, you or someone close to you has experienced sexual abuse and the damaging aftermath that can follow the victim the rest of their life.

“While Ruby Rose deals with hard times, I hope to have illuminated the closeness of a small rural community and the cast of characters that make a community colorful, friendly, and endearing.”

Author Bio

Gemma Ziegler was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. As a child, she lived on Regina Lane, a dead-end street that was surrounded by her great Aunt Regina's farm land. She went to Holy Family Grade School and Durrett High School. After the birth of her children Laura and Beau, she became a registered nurse and later a union organizer for the Nurse Professional Organization. She was married in 1978 to K. Vincent Ziegler, MD, a much-loved Louisville family physician. After her husband's death in 2013, she moved to a small cabin on their farm. During a snow storm that first year, she decided it was the ideal time to write a book, something she had wanted to do for years but never had the time.
