OBJE Works to Expand its Beauty Portfolio to Capture Portion of the $59 Billion Beauty Industry

With the Professional Beauty Association projecting that the domestic beauty industry will reach $59 billion in 2012, Obscene Jeans Corp. is working to bolster its Obscene Beauty brand with the addition of all-natural SEBA hair care products.

“The addition of SEBA products to our Obscene Beauty brand would better position the company to capture a portion of the multi-billion-dollar global beauty industry,” said OBJE President and CEO Robert Federowicz.

In the past year, the beauty industry has been a strong performer both in the U.S. and abroad despite less-than-ideal economic conditions. Leading market research providers Symphony IRI Group, Inc. and The NPD Group, Inc. announced in the Beauty Cross Channel Monitor earlier this month that total U.S. beauty sales are up in both the prestige and mass markets for the first quarter of 2011, suggesting that the resilient beauty industry has shaken off the effects of the worldwide recession. According to the Monitor, prestige-market beauty sales were up five percent in the first quarter. Many analysts project that growth will continue.

“Despite the current economic situation, the beauty industry continues to trend upward showing growth for the fourth consecutive quarter in both the food/drug/mass and prestige channels,” said Diane Nicholson, president, Beauty, The NPD Group. “After a positive, yet cautious 2010, it’s encouraging to see consumers continue to embrace newness and innovation in the beauty space.”

Obscene Jeans Corp. is taking steps to acquire the kind of innovative products driving the beauty industry upward across the globe. Last week, OBJE announced the signing of an option agreement with Houston Hair Health, the company that produces SEBA products.

“What attracted us to the SEBA line were its unique properties and all-natural composition,” Federowicz said. “This is a fantastic high-end product line that we feel could really benefit from an intensive branding effort, including the creation of new packaging. The global market for all-natural beauty supplies is exploding and SEBA has the potential to be the cornerstone of our new Obscene Beauty brand.”

The existing product line, which includes high quality shampoos, conditioners and scalp treatments formulated to eliminate dryness and increase elasticity in hair, is the brainchild of Oscar Hines. Hines created SEBA to treat the critically damaged hair he frequently encountered during the 15 years he spent building the Houston Hair Health Clinic.

“The petroleum oils used in so many hair care products are dense and not water-soluble, so they just sit on the surface of the hair and scalp, attracting environmental pollutants and creating bacterial growth that can eventually cause serious scalp conditions,” Hines said. “Due to its low molecular weight, SEBA oil penetrates the hair’s cuticle and into the inner core and root sheath, rejuvenating hair from the inside out without producing any greasy build-up. The results are obvious after the very first application.”

Those results will be studied very carefully by Federowicz as OBJE works toward a definitive agreement with Houston Hair Health.
