Seven (7) Congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gwinnett & Hall Counties Changed Their Amazing g(Race) Youth Conference to Volunteer for Disaster Relief Efforts in Marianna, FL Devastated by Hurricane Michael
SUWANEE, Ga. - Nov. 8, 2018 - PRLog -- Local leaders of the 7-congregation Sugar Hill Stake (similar to a diocese or local group of congregations) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invited 358 youth members and their leaders to travel more than 600+ miles round trip from Suwanee to Marianna, FL on Nov. 9–11 to help thousands still in need of assistance. They will be assigned to do tree work, debris cleanup, and some limited roof/tarp work repair caused by Hurricane Michael.

Ryan Bowcutt, 2nd Counselor in the Sugar Hill Stake Presidency, sent a stake-wide email invitation to all local members on Thursday, Oct. 25, explaining the focus change for this year's Youth Conference plans. President Bowcutt wrote, "Our youth have a tremendous ability to serve and touch the hearts of others.  Accordingly, we have elected to change our planned youth conference of Amazing (g)Race and instead invite the youth to participate in the relief efforts in Marianna, FL with the rest of the congregations in our stake on Nov 9-11."

Similar to previous disaster relief efforts, all adult members and their families are divided in work groups within each congregation. They are to be self-sufficient and camp approximately 3.8 miles from the Command Center (a local church-owned property in Marianna) due to lack of local available accommodations and provisions.

With this new call, all youth ages 14 and older will be partnered with adult work groups from their own congregations. Twelve (12) and 13-year old youth are also encouraged to participate alongside their families.

In reflecting about her experience in Marianna on Oct. 19-21, 13-year old Madison Maxfield said, "I learned that I could actually work to my full potential…work real hard & pick up heavy logs like all the other adults."

16-Year old Sarah Olson said, "My crew makes me feel real good doing something that Christ would do: helping others & just trying to be like Him."

Youth leaders will coordinate rides, meals, work crews, and sleeping arrangements for all youth participants.

This is the third (3rd) time this year that the 2,665 members of the Sugar Hill Stake are called to help with recent disaster relief efforts in South Carolina & Florida.
