The management association for West Lake Longjing Tea, or Dragon Well Tea, issued standardized packaging for the time-honored tea brand on Oct 10, local media reported.
The packaging for the tea produced by local farmers features rolling hills along West Lake as well as stone pagodas at the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, one of the 10 must-see sites around the landmark.
"These are the most iconic images of China Hangzhou and West Lake," said Lan Boliu, designer of the packaging.
Tea companies are adopting a new form of packaging which highlights cultural and aesthetic symbols associated with West Lake, and the tea is being sold in ceramic or iron containers.
Along with universal recognition of the place of production, the packaging is expected to regulate the market for West Lake Longjing Tea, help improve buyer awareness, and make the genuine product easier to distinguish from fakes.
West Lake Longjing Tea hit the domestic tea market during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), gained in fame during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and became popular across the country during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1644, 1644-1911).
Its history can be dated back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and it has been famous in China since the Song Dynasty (960-1279), prevailing in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties.
The legend went that Emperor Qianlong visited Lion Peak Mountain during his Hangzhou travels, and he saw some ladies picking the tea at the foot of the mountain. He was so interested in their movements that he decided to have a go himself.
While picking the tea, he received the news of his mother's illness, so he carelessly put the leaves in his right sleeve and left Hangzhou for Beijing. He visited his mother immediately upon his arrival in Beijing, and Empress Dowager smelt the fragrance of the leaves from his sleeves and wanted to have a taste.
Emperor Qianlong ordered some tea to be brewed for her, and she found herself completely refreshed after drinking a cup of tea, and she even praised it as a remedy for all ills. From then on, Shi Feng Longjing tea was listed as the tribute tea especially for Empress Dowager.
Health Effects
Longjing tea is a delicious beverage with potential health benefits owing to its rich antioxidant content. However, it's also rich in caffeine, which could adversely affect some tea drinkers in large enough amounts, so don't drink too much.
