MTR Mobile Transport Repair, which will celebrate 25 years of diesel and semi-truck repair in 2021 has earned a prominent feature in Shop Owner magazine. Showcasing the company’s six secrets to success, the article subtitled “business success and personal satisfaction are not mutually exclusive” provides insight into owner Eddie Lawrence’s journey from a teenage truck repair shop parts runner to shop owner, along with the twists, turns and other ventures he’s pursued in the time since opening the doors of MTR in 1996.

Today, Lawrence who runs MTR with his wife Holly, who serves as VP of MTR, is both proud and pleasantly surprised by the success he’s achieved. “I wanted to be a musician,” he laughs. “I started this phase of my career for a fleet that needed a mechanic. They wanted to sub their maintenance to me. So I bought a truck, set up shop, and I started as a mobile tech for this big fleet and built it from there,” Lawrence says.

Continuing he adds, “Essentially, my truck was my office and I was dispatching guys out while working on a lot for a customer. I realized then that I’d built a business, but it didn’t feel like a real business because I don’t have property. I was mobile only, and it felt very fragile. So, I bought a warehouse in 2012 and since then, we’ve continued to grow.

In the ensuing years, MTR put together a customized fleet maintenance program tailored to each customer’s needs. MTR also emphasized safety. “Our big truck repair shop strives for perfect safety ratings and we can perform simple safety modification upgrades to a fleet that aren’t currently in place,” Lawrence says.

Today, MTR handles everything from cargo to food and beverage, mail service, and a lot of construction. “We also go into military bases here quite often because we’ve got the Air Force and Army here in Colorado Springs,” says Lawrence.

The feature in Shop Owner also shines a light into Lawrence’s life outside of the truck repair shop, and the efforts he’s undertaking to help fellow shop owners cope with the stresses of being a busy business owner. “I had a health scare about five years ago, and realized I was working myself to death,” Lawrence recalls. In response, he began formulating what has since evolved into “The Life Calibration,” which is designed to help bring balance to all phases of life.

“This is a tough industry – but that doesn’t make us any less human,” Lawrence says. “The Life Calibration is a simple method that divides up the areas of our life into three different circles. From the circles, there are spokes that branch off each one,” he adds.

Lawrence began sharing the concept with his team and was humbled when they embraced it. “I saw several of them get back into something that they used to do and forgot about or neglected or some new thing that they’ve always wanted to do. It has been very moving to see some of them just run with the idea.”

More recently, Lawrence has been sharing “The Life Calibration” with fellow shop owners. “Being in a tough business doesn’t mean we don’t have emotions or challenges. If other truck repair shops can benefit from the concept I’ve developed, I consider that a win, as it will only raise the bar of excellence in the industry,” he says.

In addition to running MTR Lawrence is a musician, children’s book author, and founder of The Pedaler’s Chest, which builds custom, furniture-grade storage, displays, and performance racks for guitarists’ effects pedals. “I believe that creativity and outside passions are essential for running a successful, busy business,” he says.

MTR is clearly successful, and Lawrence intends to keep it that way. “At Mobile Transport Repair, it’s our goal to rise above; to be the best at what we do. Through communication and friendly, honest work, we strive to deliver. There is nothing greater for us at MTR than a completely satisfied and happy customer.”

“Through growth we create stability, and with stability MTR will enable all of us, our employees and customers alike, to succeed in abundance and to have a happy, fulfilling life. Maybe that’s really what the rest of the world needs too, right now. It really does feel like we could use a little bit more of that emotional connection.,” Lawrence says.
