Get to know Certified Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Sonya Wright, who serves patients in Leesburg, Virginia.

New York City, Oct 19, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - Sonya is a certified adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner specializing in urology, sexual health medicine, and aesthetics. She works at Urology Surgical Consulting, PC in Leesburg, Virginia.

The mission of Urology Surgical Consulting, PC is to ensure every patient has a superior experience. The staff are committed to advancing high quality and cost effective urological care in Northern Virginia and draws clients from across the United States.

There, Sonya cares for patients with urological needs, assists the physician with minor surgical procedures such as vasectomies and circumcisions, and oversees the general well-being of men's health. She spearheads the implementation and operation of their rapidly expanding Testosterone/ Hormone Replacement Clinic as well as assists with their new and innovative aesthetic department.

Sonya graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from George Mason University in 1999. After more than twenty years in her field she made a life-changing career decision and decided to go back to school for her advanced degree in nursing. In 2019, she obtained her Master of Science in Nursing degree from Walden University, with honors.

Sonya began her nursing career on a cardiac telemetry/ overflow unit at Arlington Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia. This was a great unit with older, highly experienced, no nonsense nurses who performed their jobs and delivered love with a firm hand. "Times were different, but the expectations on both sides remain the same. When it is time for your walk with physical therapy or time to use the incentive spirometer, you do it when the nurse comes to see you." expressed Sonya. She later moved on to learn about invasive procedures in Interventional Radiology. She loved this part of her career as it was new and exciting to her. Her experience in floor nursing provided insight into a patient's condition upon arrival and the treatment of that patient in recovery. Now, in Interventional Radiology, she was able to finally put the pieces of the puzzles together through a full-scope and continuity of patient care from illness, to diagnosis, to treatment, and finally recovery. After four years Sonya had a life shift and decided to move on to another hospital, INOVA Loudoun in Leesburg, Virginia.

Sonya went back to the floor, working nights on the cardiac telemetry/ stroke/ progressive care unit at INOVA Loudoun so that she could manage her career and family life balance. She worked as a charge nurse, committee member, preceptor, teacher, and mentor. "My most important role was as a team player and friend. As a nurse, you give your heart, sweat, and tears to your patients and to each other. Nursing is a sisterhood like no other profession on earth. As we all know, anything that can go wrong will go wrong at 0600 and 1800" noted Sonya.

She strives to make a difference in the lives of her patients by making the time to teach and taking the time to be an active listener. She also strives to be a patient teacher to new nurses, always stressing the importance of proper and safe body mechanics when handling heavy patients. "If we are careful and safe in the handling of our patients and ourselves, then we can continue to perform the job that we love, and our patients will continue to travel the road to recovery. Once a nurse, always a nurse" expressed Sonya.

She does not believe that she chose nursing as much as nursing chose her. She first loved the science of nursing and then fell in love with the art of nursing. "Not only are you putting your brain to work with the systematic processes of procedures, the Who What When Why and How, you are putting your heart and your time into the care of work you perform. Nursing is always building. The better you are at understanding one process, the better you later become with others. The nursing profession is like building a house with a strong foundation- one layer at a time" she said.

Sonya believes that every day brings a new set of challenges and a different opportunity for excellence. She thrives in knowing that every person she comes into contact with can, and often is, a source of inspiration for her life's work. It is with that steely determination that she looks forward to the sun rising each day.

Throughout her 20 years in the nursing field, Sonya has received many awards and accolades in praise of her work from patients and coworkers. She attributes her success to some of the most respected and experienced nurses founded on old school nursing principles. Their influence and constant willingness to take time to show her how and what she needed to do during the early stages of her career provided a bedrock foundation of who she is today. Moreover, that foundation created her desire for collaborative efforts in every position that she has held. Now, her inspiration is more centered on taking her experience and knowledge and imparting it to the next generation of nursing professionals.

To Sonya, staying current is of the utmost importance. She constantly researches the medical conditions and adverse symptoms that present outside the norm of her patients. She also continuously reviews the newest and best evidence-based practices for the present and future medical needs of her patients. As a compliment to her research efforts within her field and her desire to network amongst her peers she is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

A Certified Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP-C) is a nurse practitioner who is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and managing common acute and chronic health problems for patients from age 13 throughout the senior years. They deliver high quality, cost-effective care, emphasizing disease prevention and health promotion. A crucial part of their role is teaching patients and their families about maintaining their health and preventing disease.

Happily married, Sonya enjoys many things when she is not working, including visiting breweries and wineries with her husband, reading in a quiet place, hosting house parties with family and friends for "game night Fridays", baking, going grocery shopping and cooking with her teenage daughter, watching movies and hanging out with her teenage son, as well as spending time with her twin sister.

She likes all types of music but country is her favorite. Her favorite past-time is reading Historical Romance novels, in a comfortable chair with a cozy blanket. However she has been known to binge watch an entire movie series in one weekend; because who has time for commercials!  When asked who she would like to meet, Sonya answered "Audrey Hepburn. She was a wonderful mixture of serious, smart, and fun all rolled up in a caring beautiful package. And Holly Golightly will be forever famous!"
