All sports have an associated risk of dental injuries due to falls or collisions. To help prevent dental injuries, Dr Johannes Yap is educating Innaloo parents on how to choose the right sports mouth guard for kids and why it's important.

Dr Johannes Yap, principal dentist and owner of Odin House Dental Surgery in Innaloo says, "If a child is going to play a contact sport, wearing a mouth guard is an essential piece of equipment for their safety and future oral health". Studies show that children who fail to wear a mouthguard are 60 times more likely to undergo tooth damage while playing sports and this risk may rise even further for kids who are wearing braces while they play.

With all the products on the market today, how are parents to know which mouth guard is best for their child?

"For starters, a mouth guard should be compliant with all safety regulations and should be free of hazardous materials such as Formaldehyde, BPA and Pthalate (DEHP)", says Dr Yap. "They should also be comfortable, resistant to tearing and resilient. A mouth guard should fit properly, be durable, easily cleaned and not restrict speech or breathing."

With this in mind, Dr Yap suggests beginning the decision making process with a simple conversation with your dentist. "While parents have several options when considering a mouth guard for their child enrolled in a contact sport, a well-fitting, custom mouth guard, can make all the difference in ensuring a dental injury is avoided", reports Dr Yap. "While custom mouth guards can be more expensive than those found in stores or a chemist, the cost is considerably low when compared to the costs of treating a dental injury or replacing braces."

Some of these "store bought" options include ready made and mouth-formed mouth guards (boil and bite). Both are available online or at sporting-goods stores and are commonly used among young athletes but they vary greatly in protection, retention, comfort, and cost. Furthermore, since the fit can't be adjusted, they're less effective than a fitted option.

Bottom line, contact sports vary in the degree of risk and potential injury, therefore it is important to consult with a dentist before selecting a mouth guard so you can select the right one for your child and the specific activity they choose.
