African American women are disproportionately affected by financial insecurity. A closer look at wealth in America reveals staggering discrepancies among the amounts held by each group – even before Covid 19 came around. As reported by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), the 2019 national Black poverty rate was more than double the white poverty rate in the U.S., roughly 22% compared to 9%, respectively.
This is one thing Troy would like to give a hand with. His book, he said, is for the African American women who are working extraordinarily hard. The inspiration came from his wife whom he is so blessed to have. “It’s thanks to her that I am here today backed by twenty-one years in the investment advisory business and 15 of those being off the plantation”, Troy admitted.
Through The Journey: An African American Woman’s Roadmap to Independence, Young reminded his readers that planning is no simple financial journey. With so many things to think about and plan for before even starting a financial journey, the first step in this process must be organized. “We explore career, family, volunteerism, religion, whatever is important to that person. That’s how we create a plan”, the author said.
The book is organized into three sections: planning, building, and legacy. It will show all the twists and turns in one’s financial journey, from where people are likely to encounter difficulties to what steps can be done in finding a solution.
Troy A. Young has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. A significant portion of that time was with two of the nation’s largest financial services organizations, Bank of America and Citigroup. His career work also included an advisory position with Financial Planning Advisory Services (FPAS).
For the past 12 years, Troy has been providing wealth management, financial advisory, and financial planning services in private practice as an independent financial advisor through Destiny Financial Group.
