On the 12th of June, the original creator of the famous Madiba Shirt worn by the father of our nation, Mr. Nelson Mandela, celebrated his 63rd birthday at the majestic Castle Kyalami, Church of Scientology. The honorary birthday celebration and iconic gala attracted over 200 guests including Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Celebrities and even the Ministers of Sports, Arts and Culture Mr. Zizi Kodwa and other dignitaries from all over South Africa and the world, who all wanted to celebrate the legendary Mr. Ndamase and his contributions to the fashion industry.
As Ndamase celebrates his 63rd birthday, he took this momentous occasion to assemble the crème de la crème of Africa's fashion, art, and culture from across the continent and the diaspora.
Known as the man who dressed Mandela, Sonwabile’s journey into the fashion industry was filled with many difficulties. He knows what it means to have to overcome adversity. Coming from a small village in the Eastern Cape, he had to fight his way to the international stages of fashion to showcase his unique taste in fabric, a taste that would lead him to dressing one the most iconic figures in the world, President Mandela. Despite these hardships and challenges, he found himself designing the iconic Madiba Shirt and now he is the Executive President of the South African Fashion Design Agency, as well as the head of the Vukani Range Creations fashion house, and founder of the Annual Vukani Fashion Awards.
For decades, Sonwabile has dressed many notable icons and he himself has been bestowed that title. Despite this, he remains humble and ever ready to share his knowledge with the youth of South Africa interested in fashion.
This gathering aimed to unite Africa's leaders in the fashion, art, and culture sectors, transcending boundaries and working collaboratively to achieve a common goal: the celebration and promotion of Africa's fashion, art, and cultural legacy to the world.
“This event represents a pivotal moment in our collective journey towards sectorial unification and the advancement of African entrepreneurship. It is filled with African creativity, talent, and entrepreneurial spirit,” said Ndamase.
According to Sandile Hlayisi, Spokesperson for the Church of Scientology, Mr. Ndamase has done a lot for the industry and it’s only right that we honour him for what he does. “L. Ron Hubbard once said ‘A Culture is only as great as its dreams, and its dreams are dreamed by artists’, Ndamse has created an artistic legacy that still stands to this day,” said Hlayisi.
