Diana Thomas, Senior Partner at Floissac, DuBoulay, & Thomas and Immediate Past President of the Bar Association of Saint Lucia, recently attended and contributed to the success of the 18th OECS Regional Law Conference. The esteemed gathering of legal professionals was hosted in Saint Lucia from October 17-19, 2024. It attracted over 150 attendees from across the Eastern Caribbean. This year’s event was celebrated for fostering vibrant discussions and offering practical workshops on the evolving challenges and advancements in the legal profession.

As Secretary of the OECS Bar Association, Diana Thomas was instrumental in organizing this year’s event, which participants described as “brilliant” and “the best they had been to.” The conference brought together legal minds to discuss critical issues in law, such as anti-money laundering compliance, corporate governance, e-litigation, and practice management in the digital age.

Reflecting on the event, Diana remarked, “The conference created an extraordinary platform for Eastern Caribbean legal professionals to connect and exchange insights on the future of law in the region. The positive feedback we received shows how essential these gatherings are for the continued advancement of our legal community.”

The conference also included a heartfelt tribute to retired Chief Justice, The Right Hon. Dame Janice Pereira, DBE, for her invaluable contributions to the legal field. Diana expressed her admiration for Dame Janice Pereira, stating, “Dame Janice Pereira’s legacy continues to inspire us. Her dedication to justice and commitment to legal education have set a high standard for all legal professionals in the region.”

Hon. Chief Justice Mario Mitchel (Ag.) addressed participants about the interesting history and rise of the OECS Bar Association and the OECS Regional Law Conference. He highlighted the association's development in the digital age, a topic revisited during the conference workshops.

The conference offered workshops throughout. These workshops covered specialized areas of law and provided hands-on learning experiences for participants. The sessions on practice management, anti-money laundering compliance, and the application of artificial intelligence in legal practice were especially well-received. Diana emphasized the timeliness of these topics, noting, “Our profession is changing rapidly, and we must be ready to embrace new tools and techniques to enhance our practice. These workshops provided practical, actionable insights that attendees can bring back to their practices.”
