The Ranger & the Dropout: An Unlikely Success Story

By: Get News
The founders of Alpha Toro, an award-winning marketing agency, combined vastly different backgrounds to create innovative campaigns for amazing brands

On the surface, Nick Lasater, a passionate self-starter, and Scott Stevens, a former Army Ranger with the 75th Ranger Regiment, might not seem like they have much in common. But the dynamic creatives share an innovative spirit that has catapulted their marketing agency, Alpha Toro, to incredible heights.

Their story goes back to early 2004, when, after four years of military service and three combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, Stevens went on to acquire his business degree from The University of Alabama. For 10 years, he worked in various business development roles while pursuing his passion for graphic design on the side.

Meanwhile, uninspired by a university curriculum that was “all theory and no application,” Lasater dropped out of college to start his first company. He was so passionate about his first venture that he maxed out his personal credit cards to travel to Rome, Paris, and Africa to create content and test out his “separation marketing” concept.

“We first met while I still had a full-time job but was looking to have a product built for my graphic design venture,” says Stevens. Although nothing became of their initial meeting, a chance encounter two years later at a coffee shop was the turning point.

PASSIONATE CREATIVES

Lasater draws on years working the counter at a heating and air store in his 20s, where his father still works. When he faced early professional challenges, his father helped shape his views by introducing him to principle-based perspectives and teaching him how to handle tough situations to create the outcomes he desired. “No professor in the world could teach me what I learned at that store from my father,” Lasater says.

Stevens is a product of generations of military service members. He was one of the first 199 special operators to jump into Afghanistan in 2001, followed by a second combat jump into Haditha during the invasion of Iraq—all before enrolling in college. “The structure and discipline I acquired in the military, my business background working for large companies, and my personal passion for design have served as a great skill set for Alpha Toro,” he shares.

Now, six years into their agency’s journey, the dynamic duo has established an amazing portfolio of clients who mirror their personal backgrounds. Lasater leads the private sector business and serves the likes of WOW Luxury Properties, AscendAmerica, and Cullum Homes. Stevens directs government contractor clientele, including Blue Origin, Parsons Corporation, and Torch Technologies.

The common vision they share for clients, whether commercial or government, includes listening to what clients want to achieve, making campaigns and creative assets that exceed their expectations, and, most importantly, helping clients make money—because, as one of their industry heroes, David Ogilvy, said, “If it doesn’t sell, it isn’t creative.” That approach has garnered Alpha Toro national acclaim from the OBIE Awards, American Advertising Awards, and MAME Awards, among others.

“Nick and I just wanted to create the company we have always wanted to work for,” Stevens says, “and I think we’ve done just that.”

“It’s been humbling and an absolute honor to partner with such amazing clients and be a small part of their success,” concludes Lasater.
