A Heartfelt Journey Through Yoga, Nature, and the Soul - With "A Dog Called Buddha"

“A Dog Called Buddha,” the debut book by yoga teacher, therapist, and writer Steve Jamison, takes readers on a gripping adventure through the heart of Portugal as he attempts to escape a devastating wildfire in an old Land Rover, accompanied by a pack of rescued dogs.

This poignant narrative raises profound questions about our existence on Earth, our relationship with nature, and the creatures with whom we share this planet.

As Jamison navigates the treacherous terrain, his journey is not merely a physical escape but a deeper exploration of the human experience. The narrative invites readers to reflect on how we move through the world — both collectively and individually. Interwoven throughout the story are insights drawn from yogic thought, particularly the timeless teachings found in the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras, and the Upanishads. As Jamison confronts the flames and chaos around him, the perennial truths of these ancient texts come alive, illuminating the path to understanding our place in the natural world.

Steve Jamison’s background is as diverse as his experiences. Having begun his yoga journey in the 1970s, he has continuously sought to “find his way in the world.” His adventures include years spent surfing in Africa and forming a band in London, along with establishing a pioneering clothing design company that focused on vegan apparel. This unique perspective enriches A Dog Called Buddha, allowing readers to witness how life's challenges can lead to profound personal growth and a deeper connection with nature.

This gripping and touching book not only chronicles a harrowing escape but also serves as a reminder of the bond we share with animals and the importance of compassion in our lives.

Moreover, Jamison’s deep love for his rescued dogs shines through, offering a touching narrative of loyalty, resilience, and hope.

In a time when environmental issues and our connection to the natural world are more critical than ever, A Dog Called Buddha resonates with anyone seeking to reflect on their own lives and the world around them. This book is a heartfelt invitation to explore the intersection of nature, spirituality, and humanity through the lens of an extraordinary journey — one with profound teachings and lessons.

Here is what a reader has to say:

“This a remarkable book beautifully written from an unusual, not to say unique perspective. Dogs are beings too, and a natural philosophy of oneness with natural things pervades every page. A gem.” — Robert Bulling

About the author:

Steve Jamison is a yoga teacher, therapist and writer spending his time between central Portugal and South Devon. He began yoga in the 1970s and continued to practise daily as he travelled to, as he put it, “Find my way in the world.” He spent some years surfing in Africa before returning to the UK to form a band in London and then his own clothing design company, one of the first to design and successfully sell vegan clothes, including a collection to Bloomingdales in New York. During this period, he took up Kyushindo karate, which he subsequently taught. Steve returned to ‘serious’ yoga twenty years ago, spent ten years learning from Ranju Roy and Jenny Beeken and finding his own way forward, began teaching. A Dog Called Buddha is his first book.
