Vancouver photographer Jane Thomson has won 1st Place in the Dog Photography Awards “Dogs & People” category with her captivating image, The Princess & the Pea. This prestigious competition, followed by over 25,000 on Instagram, honors exceptional dog photography worldwide. Thomson’s award-winning portrait will be featured and highlighted in the competition’s exclusive annual coffee table book, a highly anticipated collection of the finest canine art globally.

The Princess & the Pea is part of a larger charitable initiative supporting the BC Children’s Hospital Pet Therapy Program through the 2025 Pet Therapy Calendar. Inspired by a joyful fairy tale theme, Thomson created each scene with young patients as beloved storybook characters alongside therapy animals, capturing the healing bond between animals and children.

This project brings joy and hope to children in treatment,” Thomson shared.

Thomson’s vision for the 2025 BC Children’s Hospital Pet Therapy calendar was to bring together the enchanting world of fairy tales with the real-life bravery of child patients and the soothing help of therapy animals.

“Bringing children’s stories to life through my portraiture has been incredibly meaningful,” the Vancouver photographer shared. “My goal was to celebrate the strength and resilience of these young patients by pairing them with the wonderful therapy dogs who support their healing journey, each dog portrait capturing a unique and heartfelt connection.”

The Pet Therapy Program at BC Children’s Hospital has long provided a vital emotional connection for children undergoing treatment, helping to ease the challenges of their medical journeys.

Seeing the happiness these photographs offer to patients and their families is a reminder of the unique relationship between animals and children,” said Dr. Alex Reed, Program Director of Pet Therapy at BC Children’s.

Founded by two well-known dog photographers, the 2024 Dog Photography Awards is a prestigious global competition that draws professional entries from around the world. Celebrated for highlighting the unique connection between humans and dogs, the “Dogs & People” category is close to Thomson’s heart. Her powerful storytelling and talent for capturing these bonds through pet photography earned her the top prize in this category.

“Observing how Jane's art highlights the profound bond between humans and animals is incredibly motivating,” shared one of the competition founders. Her winning photo is proof of the therapeutic and uplifting impact pets can have on people's lives.

The 2025 BC Children’s Hospital Pet Therapy calendar, featuring The Princess & the Pea and other enchanting portraits by renowned portrait photographer Jane Thomson, will be released in November 2024. The calendar honors the therapeutic relationship between young patients and their animal friends. All proceeds from the calendar will support the hospital’s pet therapy program. This initiative provides an invaluable source of comfort and companionship to children facing serious medical challenges at BC Children’s Hospital and the adjacent BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre.

“The presence of therapy animals has a profound effect on our patients, helping them feel less isolated during treatment,” said Dr. Reed. "We are getting closer to serving more kids with these life-changing experiences with every single calendar purchase."
