Momme is a unit used in the silk industry to measure density and thickness, with higher numbers implying that it’s a premium product. As more silk is used in higher momme-ratings, it makes the product more durable and results in a deeper, more luxurious finish.
“Our silk experts at Mayfairsilk recommend choosing 22 momme or higher in your silk bed sheets and 25 momme in your pillowcases, as it's the best balance between performance and investment,” a company spokesperson said.
After careful consideration, Mayfairsilk decided to only specialise in Mulberry silk. The production process includes planting Mulberry trees for Bombyx Mori moth to feed off exclusively. The trees are grown without pesticides, insecticides, fungicides and chemical fertilisers and products from the whole tree are used by local communities.
While the silkworms are boiled when the silk is extracted, they are eaten as a delicacy in the areas where Mulberry silk is produced, underlining the circularity of the material.
Aside from being sustainably produced, Mulberry silk has been regarded as the highest quality of silk for over 4000 years ago.
