Highlands Ranch Outdoor Adventure Summer Camp: Nature-Based Activities Update

Balance Adventure Camp (303)529-9608 has expanded the range of nature-based activities that will be available for kids during their 2025 summer camp.

-- This year’s summer camp, open for children aged 6-11, will feature an extended program focused on nature exploration and hands-on scientific discovery for a more engaging experience, Balance Adventure Camp explains.

A report from Loyola University Chicago underscores the important role of outdoor activity in youth development, emphasizing its positive effects on executive function, socialization, and a greater appreciation for nature. Yet, despite these proven benefits, children today spend half as much time outdoors as they did just 20 years ago. Balance Adventure Camp aims to tackle this decline by offering fun, educational, and nature-based activities for elementary-aged students all summer long.

The organization prioritizes natural exploration to deepen campers' ecological understanding and foster a stronger connection to the environment. As such, the program includes activities such as hiking, wildlife tracking, and plant identification, all intended to build foundational life skills like patience, endurance, and problem-solving.

Balance Adventure Camp’s scientific activities include geologic exploration of Colorado’s landscape and environmental studies that teach campers how to become active protectors of the natural world. In addition to academic enrichment, these lessons also improve children’s critical thinking and observational skills.

The summer program also offers survival skills training, covering fire building, navigation, and animal care—skills essential for fostering confident, self-reliant students. This part of the camp features collaborative challenges intended to teach campers teamwork, leadership, and effective communication.

The camp emphasizes storytelling throughout the day to keep campers engaged and inspired. Children will also take part in lessons about Colorado’s rich history and culture, along with a creative hour focused on improving self-expression through songs, dance, storytelling, and art.

“All activities are carefully scaled and adapted to be developmentally appropriate for each age group, with the complexity and independence level increasing as children progress through our program,” a representative says. To this end, Balance Adventure Camp offers a progressive learning model with three different tiers, Explorer for ages 6-7, Pathfinder for ages 8-9, and Trailblazer for ages 10-11.
