Yumi Yamazaki is an artist whose work is the focal point of Hozuki, the 2021 Summer Art Lift Collection. “Hozuki” denotes the cape gooseberry fruit and symbolizes a duality of expectations for women in modern society. In Yumi’s work, there is a motif of a bright red ribbon that wraps around the subject, often hiding and obstructing the eyes, ears, and mouth. Societal pressures “force women to become a delicately packaged bouquet that is quiet, and does not need to be heard.” When the cape gooseberry matures, the transparent outer skin protects and also constrains the petite, delicate fruit.
In the fashion pieces, beautiful shapes form with ribbons, exaggerated silhouettes, and lines of texture. The vitality of the ribbon also breaks down boundaries to bring different sides of color together, shaping people as strong individuals that are not solely beautiful. The ribbon is worn on the body as a decorative remembrance, reminding women to have the courage to tear apart the bondage from social opinion and cultural confinement.
