Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is a fluid that is used to reduce the air pollution caused by a diesel engine. It is also known by the names AUS 32 or ARLA 32 and marketed as AdBlue. The DEF or AdBlue is an aqueous urea solution made with 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. To meet stringent NOx emission standards for commercial truck engines and off-road engines, most engine makers have installed an embedded selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology in the diesel vehicles, which requires DEF to operate. AdBlue is filled in a separate tank in vehicles with SCR technology. DEF is injected in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, where it is heated in the exhaust stream and decomposes into ammonia and COâ‚‚. When the NOx from the engine exhaust stream reacts inside the catalyst with the ammonia, the harmful NOx molecules in the exhaust stream are converted to harmless nitrogen and water, which are then released from the tailpipe of the vehicle. Typically, a diesel engine requires about 3% DEF of the fuel.

Market Dynamics
The Global Diesel Exhaust Fluid (AdBlue) Market is projected to witness healthy growth and register a CAGR of 8.4% during the forecast period, 2019–2028. The prominent factors driving the growth of the market are the increase in the adoption of carbon emission norms by the automotive manufacturers and the increase in the sale of passenger cars and commercial vehicles across the globe. However, the gradual adoption of electric vehicles and mass of production of e-vehicles is expected to hamper the growth of diesel-powered vehicles in the coming years, thereby hampering the growth of the diesel exhaust fluid (AdBlue) market during the assessment period. Nevertheless, the rapidly growing automotive industry in countries in Asia-Pacific such as China, Japan, India, and Singapore coupled with the development of hybrid selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) and adoption of SCR technology in passenger vehicles are likely to boost the demand for AdBlue and create lucrative opportunities for the players operating in the global market.

Regional Analysis
The Global Diesel Exhaust Fluid (Adblue) Market has been divided based on region into Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa.
The global diesel exhaust fluid (AdBlue) market is studied across five key regions, namely, North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa. The market in North America held the largest market share in 2018 and is projected to exhibit a healthy CAGR of around 8.0% during the forecast period. However, the market in Asia-Pacific for DEF (AdBlue) is expected to grow at the highest CAGR of over 9.0%, which is mainly due to high growth in demand for the product is rapidly growing automotive industry in this regional market.
The market in Asia-Pacific held the largest market share of over 35% in 2018 and is projected to exhibit a healthy CAGR of over 8.5% during the forecast period. This is mainly attributed to the increasing stringency of vehicular emission regulations by the local governments in major economies, namely, China, India, and Indonesia. Additionally, the robust growth of the automotive industry in this region is expected to fuel the demand for the various emission control technologies to meet the global and domestic emission standards.
