Rashay Layman, founder of Sown Strategies and Senior Public Relations Manager at ESA, is taking a stand to raise awareness about the importance of renewable energy development in Ohio. With over a decade of experience in community engagement and renewable energy advocacy, Rashay is using her voice to highlight the need for sustainable solutions in the state’s energy sector.
“Ohio has immense potential to be a leader in renewable energy,” Layman states. “But we can’t do it without the support and understanding of our communities. It’s crucial that people realize the long-term benefits, not just for the environment but for our economy and future generations.”
According to the American Clean Power Association, Ohio ranks 25th in the nation for renewable energy capacity, with over 3,500 megawatts of renewable energy potential waiting to be tapped. However, despite this potential, renewable sources only account for about 3% of Ohio’s total energy production. Rashay aims to change that narrative by advocating for more community-driven renewable energy projects.
Rashay’s journey into renewable energy advocacy began years ago when she realized the impact that sustainable energy could have on both the environment and local communities. Through her work with Sown Strategies, she has led campaigns that empower rural and urban communities to actively participate in the development of wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects. Her approach has always been about building trust and ensuring that these projects benefit the very people they impact.
“When communities are engaged from the start, they’re more likely to support new energy projects,” Layman explains. “They need to see how these initiatives will bring jobs, economic growth, and attract talent to their area. It’s about creating a win-win situation.”
Currently, the renewable energy sector supports over 114,000 jobs in Ohio, according to the Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) Clean Jobs Report. Rashay emphasizes that these numbers could rise significantly with more investment and awareness. “We’re not just talking about an environmental issue; we’re talking about job creation, economic development, and diversified communities,” she adds.
Rashay is also passionate about addressing the misconceptions surrounding renewable energy. “There’s still a lot of misinformation out there about the costs and feasibility of renewable projects,” she notes. “In reality, wind and solar have become some of the most affordable energy sources, and Ohio has the infrastructure to support them.”
In her role as a public relations expert, Rashay Layman works to bridge the gap between renewable energy developers and local communities, ensuring that projects are designed with community input and support. “It’s not about forcing change; it’s about building relationships and showing people the tangible benefits of renewable energy,” Layman emphasizes.
Rashay Layman’s commitment to raising awareness about renewable energy goes beyond her professional work. She regularly participates in community forums, educational workshops, and public discussions to engage with Ohio residents. “The more we talk about it, the more people start to see the possibilities,” she says. “This isn’t just about decarbonization—it’s about building a sustainable future for our children in the strongest America we can make together.”
